Senior all-stars display 3-point range -- Gazette.Net

The annual Montgomery County Senior All-Star Game features some of the best girls’ basketball players in the county, but Saturday’s event — thanks to the addition of a 3-point contest and Team Maryland’s second-half 3-point barrage — featured some of the best shooters in the greater Washington, D.C. area.

After the girls showed off their long-distance shooting in the contest during intermission, Team Maryland went for six second-half 3-pointers and turned a 39-27 halftime lead into a convincing 82-52 victory over Team Montgomery County at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring.

Walt Whitman’s Maddie Cannon was named the most valuable player, finishing with seven points, five rebounds and a 3-pointer.

“Our strategy was just to pass the ball, move it around, take really good shots,” said Cannon. “And I think we got that.”

Whitman’s Avery Witt hit three 3-pointers and scored 12 points while Quince Orchard’s Brittany Beckwith, Damascus’s Jenna Kaufman and Wheaton’s Danielle Mackenzie rounded out Team Maryland’s top scorers.

“It was fun. It was cool playing with some of the best girls from different schools, seeing how we all work together,” said Beckwith, who averaged 17.1 points on the season. “[We showed how] to be a basketball player, just to come out and do what you do, not having set plays or set defenses. We just really showed that today.”

Walter Johnson’s Melanie Ackerman of Team Montgomery County won the 3-point contest by making 12 threes in the final round to defeat Damascus’s Lauren Green of Team Maryland.

The contest also included John F. Kennedy’s Makeda Wright and her teammate Kennedy’s Daysha Adams, who led county public schools in 3-pointers with 70.

Green started the second half with a 3-pointer and combined with Kaufman to score Team Maryland’s first 12 points after intermission, putting the game out of reach.

“It was absolutely a bunch of fun,” said Rockville’s Kurtis Cross, coaching Team Maryland. “... Our girls moved the ball pretty well and ended up shooting the ball really well.”

Gaithersburg’s Janessa Fauntroy and the Blair duo of Shannon Healy and Erica Adarkwa led Team Montgomery County in scoring.

For the all-star game participants, this was the last chance to play in their high school uniforms.

“It’s kind of bitter sweet,” said Beckwith, who is set to play basketball at Saint Vincent College in Pennsylvania. “I’m going to miss high school but I’m ready to go on to college and play at the next level.”
