A wanted man shot and killed himself Friday, St. Mary’s authorities report, as four sheriff’s detectives confronted him in the basement of a Leonardtown area home.
Kenneth Michael Woodburn, 24, fired a round from a .22-caliber rifle into his head, when the law officers told him to drop the rifle as they took out their own guns, according to a senior detective. The injured man initially had a pulse, and the officers tried to save him through chest compressions until an ambulance crew arrived and determined he had died.
A judge issued a bench warrant in 2012 for Woodburn’s arrest on a charge of violating his probation, online court records state, from his guilty plea to a burglary offense. Detectives went to two locations Friday to find Woodburn, police report, including the Hampton Road address off Route 244 where he had spent the night. The home’s owner opened the door to the investigators when they arrived shortly before noon and directed them to go to the basement, police report.
