Eva Turner Elementary School and Benjamin Stoddert Middle School in Waldorf activated emergency protocol Wednesday morning in response to a report of shots fired in the area.

Charles County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Diane Richardson said the office received a report around 10:45 a.m. of the sound of shots fired. In turn, the two schools initiated their “shelter in place” protocol, meaning any students outside were brought inside and there would be no outdoor activities for the duration of the emergency, said Charles County Public Schools spokeswoman Katie O’Malley-Simpson.

O’Malley-Simpson said the protocol is standard procedure in these cases when the police advise the sytem to take action.

Around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, information was limited. Richardson said officers found shell casings near Bannister Circle and St. Ignatius Drive. Officers had observed groups of people running, Richardson said, but it was unclear why they were doing so. Police were in the process of ascertaining the motive at press time.
