Voters of the town of La Plata, the decision is now up to you. We have fought for almost three years and through two courts for the opportunity for you to cast your vote.
Our small town is at a crossroads. The annexation for the Wal-Mart Supercenter opens the door with the imminent more than 400-acre HUB annexation to make the intersection of U.S. 301 and Rosewick Road another Waldorf. Our “vision” for a pedestrian-friendly downtown with the library, carousel, restaurants and small retail stores will be abandoned in the name of big business and big money.
Those who stand to gain money from this annexation do not live in our town. Among those who have been very vocal and spent many dollars in promoting the annexation, who do not live in our town and cannot vote are the property owners, the attorneys involved, a commercial real estate developer and other letter writers who represent big business in Southern Maryland, all of the Wal-Mart and Faison executives and all the smiling faces on their shiny brochures that include a police officer with a New York patch.
Come out and vote to reject the annexation from noon to 8 p.m. April 9 at town hall, and then go out to eat, shop and support our small-town businesses.
