A 3-month-old girl was pronounced dead in a hospital’s emergency room Wednesday morning, authorities report, after police and an ambulance crew responded to a predawn call that she was not breathing at a home in Great Mills.

Efforts to revive the child immediately began after St. Mary’s sheriff’s deputies and the emergency medical services volunteers arrived at about 4:44 a.m. at the residence on Fox Chase Drive, the sheriff’s office reports, and she was taken by ambulance to Medstar St. Mary’s Hospital, where emergency room medical staff determined that she had died.

Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the child’s death.

“At this time, nothing indicates any signs of foul play,” detective Capt. Terry Black said Wednesday afternoon, adding that the child’s body will be taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Baltimore for an autopsy.
