A Lexington Park woman was released from custody Monday on personal recognizance after her arrest on three charges of animal cruelty according to court papers stating three puppies were found in a trash bin near where she lived with the dogs’ owner.

The owner of the three Yorkshire terriers, which were born two weeks ago, told police Sunday that Tammy Maria Curtis, 49, claimed to have killed the puppies, before a witness found them wrapped in a white trash bag in the container, according to a statement of probable cause filed from St. Mary’s sheriff’s deputy Matthew McCuen’s investigation at the residence off Great Mills Road.

The recovered puppies initially were having difficulty breathing, court papers state, but a sheriff’s spokesperson said Tuesday that they were returned to their owner and appeared to be in good condition.
