Two people were struck and killed Friday night by a minivan on Burnt Store Road in Hughesville, the Charles County Sheriff's Office reported.

At 9:29 p.m. May 16, officers were dispatched to the 14300 block of Burnt Store Road after someone reported that two people had been struck by a vehicle.

When officers arrived, they spoke with a witness who said he was traveling east in a minivan on Burnt Store Road when he saw a vehicle stopped in the middle of the dark roadway. He told police he saw a man and a woman, who appeared to be arguing, outside of the car but in the westbound lane near a curve and just over the crest of a hill.

At that point, the driver of the minivan said he drove over the top of the hill and struck the man and woman, according to the police report.

Steven Jacob Briggs, 25, of Brandywine died on the scene.

Leeann Renee Robinson, 24, of Lexington Park was flown to Prince George's County Hospital Trauma Center in Cheverly, but was declared dead after she arrived at the hospital, police reported.

The driver of the minivan, a 51-year-old man, of Charlotte Hall, stayed on the scene.

Officer P.McPherson of the sheriff's office traffic operations unit is investigating.
