Carol Lange has led the Diamond Elementary School community as its principal for 16 years, but on Thursday, she said her goodbyes before heading into retirement.

A community farewell celebration was held for Lange from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the school, 4 Marquis Drive.

Shannon Phelan, the school’s PTA president, said Diamond Elementary will be petitioning Montgomery County Public Schools to rename the media center in honor of Lange. Phelan said the goal is to obtain at least 500 signatures for the petition. Those who would like to sign it can do so at ipetitions.com/petition/diamond-es-rename-media-center.

As of Friday, the petition had already received 356 signatures.

Dan Walder will serve as the new principal beginning July 1, according to the school system.
