A Leonardtown woman has been charged through a summons with theft in court papers alleging she stole two cell phones on Friday, before she was found during a search of a wooded area in northern St. Mary’s and taken to a hospital.

Law officers responded that evening to a home in the Wicomico Shores community, where they were told that 41-year-old Michelle Ellen Ann Waro had taken a phone owned by her sister, Brenda Jan Nussberger, and a phone belonging to Nussberger’s boyfriend, John Andrew Swierzkowski III, according to a charges application filed by sheriff’s deputy Michael Phelan.

The phones were taken from a bedroom, charging papers state, and Waro “was located several hours later, in a wooded area near the victim’s house, and [was] transported to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital for further evaluation.”

The search effort involving Mechanicsville and Charles County fire and rescue volunteers, along with bloodhounds and a Maryland State Police helicopter crew, began at about 10 p.m. Friday and was completed at about 2 a.m. Saturday, according to a St. Mary’s dispatch report stating that cell-phone conversations with the woman indicated that she stepped off a trail and went through a stream as she moved toward the sounds from a racetrack, where she could hear “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
