Firefighters and emergency personnel continued to battle a blaze at the Lifelong Learning Center in Waldorf Wednesday evening, after fire officials believe the building had been struck by lightning during the evening’s passing storm, Charles County Public Schools spokeswoman Katie O’Malley-Simpson said.

At about 6:15 p.m, emergency personnel were called to a working fire at the center located on Vivian Adams Drive in Waldorf, O’Malley Simpson said.

She said there were students and staff in the building at the time and all 80 people were evacuated after hearing a loud noise and smelling smoke. No one was injured during the incident and O’Malley-Simpson said as of 8 p.m. 50 percent of the structure was a total loss and firefighters were still battling the fire.

The Lifelong Learning Center is primarily used for adult education programs.

Classes at the learning center are cancelled until further notice. O’Malley-Simpson said school system staff will meet Thursday to discuss options as to where and when to schedule classes normally held at the center.
