Montgomery County police are looking into the death of an 8-year-old Rockville girl who died Tuesday after swimming at a Rockville pool.

Stephanie Benitez, 8, of the 1700 block of Gunther Avenue, was pronounced dead Tuesday night, police said in a news release.

County and Rockville police were called to the city’s Rockville Swim and Fitness Center on Martins Lane at 2:39 p.m. Tuesday to investigate a possible drowning.

Investigators think Stephanie had jumped off the pool’s diving board and swam to a ladder at the deep end of the pool, police said.

When she reached the ladder, she was unable to pull herself out of the water and began making what witnesses described as unusual movements.

Lifeguards pulled Benitez from the pool and began to treat her, but she remained unresponsive.

The Medical Examiner’s Office in Baltimore will conduct an autopsy to help determine the cause of death.
