Solomons Island has been tentatively shut down due to a gas leak.
About 1 p.m. Friday afternoon, the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office issued a Nixle alert declaring the island would be temporarily shut down and cars would not be allowed past the Welcome Center.
Lt. Capt. Steve Jones from the sheriff’s office said the leak was likely due to underground electrical construction currently being done on the island.
Jones said no evacuation has been ordered, but residents and those on the island have been asked to shelter in place until the situation has been resolved.
Jones said an evacuation could be more dangerous because individuals would have to drive past the gas leak location in order to leave the island which could cause a more harmful situation.
Jones estimated the process would take between two and three hours to be resolved.
