Independence Day celebration will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the La Plata Train Station, 100 Kent Ave. Solid Brass will perform. Free museum and caboose tours, children’s activities, hot dogs, bottled water and ice cream will be available. Call 301-934-8421.

Household hazardous waste collection day will be from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. July 5 at the county landfill on Billingsley Road East between Piney Church Road and Route 5, Waldorf. Items accepted free of charge include pesticides, herbicides, fertilizer, gasoline, motor oil, antifreeze, paint, cleaning supplies, pool chemicals, batteries and expired prescription drugs. Chautauqua 2008: ‘‘Civil Rights: Taking a Stand” will be presented from 7-9 p.m. July 7-10 at the College of Southern Maryland’s La Plata campus, 8730 Mitchell Road. Meet Martin Luther King Jr. July 7, George Wallace July 8, Rosa Parks July 9 and Malcolm X July 10 as these historical figures are featured during Chautauqua, hosted under a big tent at CSM.
