Special events
Nanjemoy Community Center will host a New Year's celebration 7-9 p.m. Jan. 2. Live local teen band will keep the party going. Refreshments will be provided. Open to 13-17. Resident fee, $3 in advance, $5 at the door; nonresident, $5 in advance, $7 at the door.
Martin Luther King coloring contest will be offered for children 5-6, 7-8, and 9-10. Coloring pages are available at all community centers 3-9 p.m. Jan. 5-14. Return the completed form to any of the centers by Jan. 14. One winner will be selected from each age group. Winner will receive a prize. Free.
La "Tea" Da Social for 12 and older will be offered at Hanson Community Center 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Jan. 10. Enjoy a cup of tea, desserts and meet new friends. Participants will enjoy activities, discussions, and a craft project. Registration deadline, Jan. 8. Resident fee, $5; nonresident, $7.
Parent's Night Out will be held at Henson Community Center 6-9 p.m. Jan. 9. Don't worry about who can watch the kids Friday night. Kids will make a craft, play games, watch a movie and enjoy a snack. Open to 5-12. This is an ongoing, monthly program. Resident fee, $8; nonresident, $9. Registration required two days before the event.
Drop & Shop program at Wade Community Center 5:30-9 p.m. Jan. 23. Go see a movie, do some shopping, or just relax. Bring the kids for a fun night of movies, games, crafts, and a pizza dinner. Open to 5-12. Resident fee, $5 in advance, $10 day of; nonresident, $7 in advance, $14 day of.
Patuxent Partners bluegrass concert and spaghetti dinner at Nanjemoy Community Center 5:30-9 p.m. Jan. 31. Enjoy a night of great bluegrass and food. Since 1975, the Patuxent Partners have been entertaining with their exciting brand of bluegrass. Enjoy a spaghetti dinner before the show sponsored by Nanjemoy Senior Center Council. Dinner will be served 5:30-6:30 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m. Sponsored in part by the Maryland State Arts Council and the Charles County Arts Alliance. After-school activities
The after-school activities program is designed for children in Grades 6-8 who will benefit from staying after school with peers and friends. Kids enjoy a snack, homework help, gym time, crafts and more. Closed on school closing days. Fees are not pro-rated for short weeks. This program runs at various school community centers Monday-Friday, and is an ongoing program. The registration deadline is the Friday prior to program start. Resident fee, $25 per week. Available schools are Somers, Piccowaxen, Mattawoman, Hanson, Henson, Smallwood and Stoddert middle schools.
Tutoring, homework help
For kids having trouble in school who don't know where to go, center staff offer free tutoring and homework help. Children 10-12 are welcome each Monday, and children 13-15 Tuesdays. Program runs 7-8 p.m. This is a free program at Wade Community Center, Waldorf.
Events for toddlers and younger children
Music and Movement for kids 18 months to 3 years will be offered at Stoddert Community Center each Monday, Jan. 5-Feb. 2. In this basic class children will explore rhythm and movement with fun and games. Parents must participate. Fee includes one child and one parent or guardian. No class Jan. 19. Registration deadline, one week prior to start. Resident fee, $30; nonresident, $32.
JumpBunch is an age-appropriate program which introduces sports and fitness to children in a safe and noncompetitive environment. Teaching consists of praise and encouragement enabling kids to build self-confidence, develop healthy habits and a positive attitude. Students are guided through all phases of physical development: eye/hand coordination, fine and gross motor skills, strength and balance. A different activity each week like sports, sports readiness skills, fitness activities and working together. Awards given at the end of session. Start Smart multi-sports development program for the little kids is back. Start Smart is a nationally sanctioned program through the National Alliance of Youth Sports.The six week class is an introduction to a wide range of sports for children 3-5. The program includes parents in preparing children for organized youth sports in a fun, nonthreatening environment. The program teaches using fun, developmentally age-appropriate equipment to prepare children for traditional sports without the fear of failure. The first night of class is a parents-only meeting. Getting the most from your digital camera is for 16 and older. Program is offered at Nanjemoy Community Center 6-7:30 p.m.each Tuesday, Jan. 20-March 10. Professional photographer Irving Harris will explain in clear, easy-to-follow terms how to get the best results from a digital camera, from basic information about the many settings on a camera to composition rules that set images apart. Cooking classes
Little chefs cooking and nutrition for kids will be offered at Mattawoman Community Center 12:45-1:45 p.m. each Saturday, Jan. 10-31. Join Marcie Leggett of Events by Design. Little chefs will make no-bake recipes, simple desserts and be introduced to international foods. Kitchen safety will be discussed. A personal chef hat, class cookbook, and supplies are all included. Chocolate is always in season at Hanson Community Center 7-9 p.m. Feb. 11. Learn the edible art of dipping and decorating strawberries, bananas, pretzels and more with white and milk chocolate. Crafting
Bird feeder craft for crafters of all ages at Nanjemoy Community Center 1-2 p.m. or 6:30-8 p.m. Jan. 5. Create a bird feeder for hungry birds during the winter months, when the snow-covered ground makes food scarce. Join the Head Start students and the senior center participants for the afternoon session. All materials included. Registration deadline, Jan. 7. Registration fee, $3; nonresident, $4.
Introduction to basic woodcarving and finishing techniques will be offered to participants 16 and older at Somers Community Center 7-9 p.m. each Tuesday, Jan. 6-Feb. 24. Instructor is Melvin Williams. Resident fee is $75; nonresident, $80.
Learn to create a unique, photo-safe album to showcase favorite photos at the creative memories events offered each month at Henson community center Jan. 3, Feb. 7 or March 7, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; at Wade Jan. 10, Feb. 14 or March 14, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Bring 6-10 theme related photos. Mother/daughter bracelet workshop will be offered at Henson Community Center 6-7 p.m. Jan. 14, Feb. 11, or March 11. Mothers and daughters, aunts and nieces, or best friends can come and create a zigzag bracelet or other type of bracelet. The zigzag bracelet will consist of seed beads and bugle beads to create a zigzag flower design bracelet. Learn how to read a pattern, attach a clasp and complete a bracelet. All supplies included. Dance
Line dancing will be offered at Wade Community Center 7-8:30 p.m. each Thursday, Jan. 8-Feb. 12. Learn syncopated steps to the newest dance music. For beginners and veteran dancers.
Beginner D.C. hand dance will be offered 11a.m.-12:30 p.m. each Saturday, Jan. 24-March 14 at Mattawoman Community Center. Hand Dance is a partner style swing dance with a smooth flow. Fitness Challenge at Nanjemoy Community Center. The challenge is simple…participate in o fitness classes or work out in the fitness center and earn points. The individual with the most points at the end of the month will receive a special prize. Challenge begins Jan. 2. Meets 6:30 p.m. Jan. 27 and Feb. 24 to tally points. The final day, March 31, program will determine a winner. Light refreshments will be provided. Discuss exercise strategies and success stories. Open to 18 and older. Registration free. New at Port Tobacco beginning Jan. 5, 4:40-5:40 p.m. and 5:45-6:45 p.m. each Monday and Wednesday and 9-10 a.m. each Saturday, Jazzercise ... fresh moves, new music, pure motivation. Each 60-minute workout blends dance and muscle toning movements choreographed to today's hottest music. This class will challenge kids and teens to put away the XBox and get off the computers for 45 minutes of fitness fun. Instructor is Richard Holmes.
Cardio kickboxing and body sculpting for adults age 18 and older at Mattawoman Community Center runs each Monday and Wednesday, 7-8p.m., Jan. 21-Feb. 23. Join certified personal trainer, Kelvin DelMarch with Resurrect Fitness. Shed extra pounds while having fun. Bring a towel and jump rope. Nutritional counseling and bottled water provided. Sports programs
Elks hoop shoot national free throw contest is back. This event is free and open to the public. Awards presented to all age group winners. Winner moves up to district level, then regional and state finals. State winner advances to national finals where the winner will have their name enshrined in the James Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Must include proof of age when registering (copy of birth certificate, passport, or baptismal certificate). Age group eligibility is determined by child's age as of April 1, not necessarily their current age. Co-sponsored by Waldorf BPO Elks Lodge No. 2421 and the Division of Parks and Recreation. Remote Control Car Races at Stoddert Community Center 6:30-8 p.m. Friday nights Center is making a list of interested participants to organize a weekly fun time. A light snack will be provided. Tae Kwon Do at Somers Community Center. Students learn the basic principles and health benefits of Hapkido and Tae Kwon Do. Topics to be covered include kicks, punches, blocks, forms, tumbling, falls, breathing, history, and self-defense. Learn from certified instructor William Blake. Playstation 2 Madden 2008 Tournament at Wade Community Center 6-9:30 p.m. Jan. 29. Come by the Center for pizza, soda, chips, and bragging rights. Single elimination tournament with board games and other activities to play while you wait. Space is limited. A gift certificate will be awarded to the winner. Open to 12-18. Join us. Indoor community pools at Lackey and North Point high schools
Open swim is held at each indoor community pool at the hours shown. The cost is free for 2 and younger, $4 for 3-12, $5 for 13-59, $4 for 60 and older. Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Group rates are available for eight or more but require a reservation be made at least two weeks before the event. Punch cards and pool memberships are also available.
Come to the pools for water aerobics. Classes are low-impact with emphasis on stretching, cardiovascular, and resistance exercises. Participants will perform exercises using the natural resistance of water with various pieces of equipment. Participants do not need to know how to swim, but they should be comfortable in the water. Please call for a class schedule.
Swim Lessons are currently being offered at both indoor pools. Resident fee, $55, nonresident, $60. Sessions consist of eight 35-minute classes. Each session includes one day of basic water safety skills. Children should be able to perform all skills of the previous level before moving on to a higher level. For safety reasons, all class sizes are limited to a maximum number of participants. Classes may be canceled due to low enrollment. Instructors may move children to a different level class if the child is unable to participate in the skill level of the registered class. Please contact the Aquatics Supervisor if health conditions warrant additional accommodations for participation. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Fitness Swimming for Adults will be offered at North Point pool 7:45-8:45 p.m. each Monday and Wednesday, Jan. 5-Feb. 4. Designed to give adult swimmers an opportunity to participate in organized aquatic workouts. An instructor will be provided on deck to lead the workouts, motivate swimmers and promote proper stroke techniques. Program is designed for intermediate and advanced swimmers who are comfortable with the water and are able to swim 50 yards of both freestyle and backstroke. Open to age 18 and older. Resident fee, $50; nonresident, $55.

Elite Gymnastics & Recreation Center
The Snowflake Invitational Gymnastics Meet will be at Elite 8a.m.-5p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 24 and 25. The United States Association of Gymnastics Jr. Olympic Competition for levels 4-9. Taekwondo for Kids is a unique blend of martial arts and physical fitness training offered each Tuesday and Thursday. Age groups and times are 4-6 from 6-6:30 p.m., 7-12 from 6:30-7:1p.m., 13 and older 8-p.m. It is well known for enhancing a child's concentration and ability to focus. KIDFIT drop-in for infants-4 is available 9:30-10:15 a.m. or 10:15-11 a.m.each Monday and Friday. Music, obstacle courses, games, and creative play. Parents participate. Fee: $4 per visit.
