Patuxent Playhouse will present "A Christmas Story" at the St. John Vianney Family Life Center Theater, located at 105 Vianney Lane in Prince Frederick.
Set in the 1940s during a snowy Christmas season in Indiana, 9-year-old Ralphie Parker longs for the ideal Christmas gift — a Red Ryder 200-shot, carbine-action, range-model air rifle. But when Ralphie's gruff dad and doting mom, overbearing teacher and even a stressed-out Santa quote the usual BB gun warning "You'll shoot your eye out!" Ralphie mounts a full-scale, hint dropping campaign that is a sly combination of innocence and calculation. For those souls brave enough to go on a night hike, there will be pizza and drinks at the Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Nature Center at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6. Participants will enjoy pizza first and talk about adaptations that animals have to be active at night, and then head out for a hike. Reservations with paid fee required. Enjoy a free concert featuring Ray Owen performing "The Song Buccaneer," a musical adventure filled with pirates, islands, sea life, beached ships, sailors and mythical creatures at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at the Calvert Marine Museum auditorium. As a Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and national recording artist, Owen has traveled around the world performing with legendary entertainers such as Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, Arlo Guthrie, Bob Hope, as well as others. With a repertoire of 900 songs, Owen's vocals, combined with good time music and humor, are captivating audiences everywhere. Southern Middle School in Calvert County will host a Student-Faculty Basketball Game at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6. This game will serve as a fundraiser for the school's Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support program, which encourages positive behavior amongst students.
Bradley M. Gottfried, president of the College of Southern Maryland, will host "The Civil War Comes to St. Mary's County" as part of the 2009 Sotterley Plantation Speaker Series, at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, in the barn. Gottfried will describe the fascinating events that occurred in St. Mary's County during the turbulent Civil War. From the landing of Federal troops at Leonardtown in 1861 through the release of the Confederate prisoners at Point Lookout Prisoner of War Camp in 1865, St. Mary's County played an important role in the Civil War. Calvert County Parks and Recreation is hosting The Big "Apple" Taste Test to win two tickets to New York City to see the famous Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall on Dec. 11. Bake or make an apple dish. Entries must be delivered to the Southern Community Center by 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6. The League of Women Voters of Calvert County will host Jewelry Jubilee beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at the home of Carma Latvala, 3930 Chaneyville Road in Owings. Children ages 18 months to 3 years are invited to join a naturalist at Battle Creek Cypress Swamp for a program entitled "Leaves on the Ground" at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7. The Calvert County Branch of the NAACP will hold its Annual Fall Luncheon, celebrating 75 years of continuous service to the citizens of Calvert County, at noon on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Rod 'N' Reel Restaurant in Chesapeake Beach. The Calvert NAACP will also be celebrating the centennial of the NAACP at the event. Branches across the country have been celebrating the 100 Anniversary of the NAACP since January 2009 and throughout the year. Tickets are $40 each. The Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse, Inc. (CAASA) will sponsor its ninth annual "Step by Step" 5K Fun Run/ Walk at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7. This event is held in memory of Mike Blackwell, a marathon runner killed by a hit-and-run driver in January 2001. The proceeds from this year's event will benefit CAASA programs such as Project Graduation, National Night Out, Youth Summit and the Mini-Grant Program, just to name a few. There will be a free estate planning workshop at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, at the SMECO Auditorium, located at 15035 Burnt Store Road in Hughesville.
The Advanced Estate Planning Workshop will cover in depth the key elements of estate planning strategies: Selling or keeping the business in the family; Protecting and growing money; Business structures; Transferring assets within the family; Preparing family for the money; Philanthropy; and financial team.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 23-6, will offer the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police boating safety course in five sessions. The two-hour sessions will meet in the Community Resources Building in Prince Frederick (the old Calvert County Library across from the Post Office) from 7 to 9 p.m. on the following dates: Nov. 9, 12, 16, 20 and 23. This course is required for the operation of any vessel, boat, or personal watercraft on Maryland waters for persons born after July 1, 1972. The cost is $20 per student. The Calvert County Office on Aging will host a veterans program, "Remembering Courage and Honoring Sacrifices" from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Southern Pines Senior Center, 90 Appeal Lane in Lusby. A discussion about the mental health concerns and community reintegration of returning combat veterans will be held at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center in California, Md., from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10. Active-duty military, veterans, families, healthcare providers, educators, clergy, employers and law enforcement are invited to attend.
Washington Post journalist and author Christian Davenport and Dr. Joel Scholten, associate chief of staff for rehabilitative services at the Washington, D.C., Veterans Administration Medical Center, will give presentations, according to a press release. Davenport's book, "As You Were: To War and Back" details the experiences of five members of the Virginia National Guard's Black Hawk Battalion who spent a one-year deployment in Iraq. Scholten specializes in combat-related post traumatic stress disorder and brain injuries.

Grace Brethren Church will present The Calvary Quartet in concert at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14. The Greenville, S.C.-based group has been singing classic gospel music since 1994. The Calverton School Parents Association will host a Holiday Basket Bingo on Sunday, Nov. 15, at The Calverton School's Leitch Memorial Gymnasium. Doors open at noon with early bird games beginning at 1 p.m. Prizes include more than $5,000 of Longaberger baskets and Vera Bradley products filled with gift items. Admission is $20 per person for 20 regular games and $5 for each additional game packet. Seating is limited and everyone attending the event must have a paid admission ticket.

"Birding for All Levels" will take place from 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, at the Myrtle Grove WMA in Charles County. Attendees will get to observe the diverse habitat for hawks, sparrows, woodpeckers and early waterfowl. There are no facilities or fees but reservations are required. Youth are especially welcome. The League of Women Voters annual Legislative Evening with Calvert's Annapolis delegation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the Calvert Pines Senior Center, 450 West Dares Beach Road in Prince Frederick. Representatives from local community groups will have the opportunity to address state legislators regarding their 2010 legislative priorities for the upcoming January 2010 Maryland General Assembly. Agenda items will include highlights of the 2009 legislative session, presentations by community organizations, comments by the public if time permits and wrap-up remarks by the Annapolis delegation. The Calvert County Chamber of Commerce will present Legal Lunches from noon to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 17, hosted by Davis Upton, Palumbo & Keffler LLC, 132 Main Street in Prince Frederick. This is a free forum for the presentation and discussion of legal issues facing the business owner. Topics to be discussed include debt collection basics, small claims court, collection of judgments and the Maryland Debt Collection Statute.
