Senior notes

As hurricane season approaches, it is time to think about how to prepare yourself in case of an emergency. Are you ready to be homebound or without electricity for at least 72 hours? Consider what you would need and make sure it is readily available. Develop a support system of at least three people who can check on you and are willing to check on each other. Think about possible sources of transportation in case you have to evacuate. Make sure you have certain items available at home: a battery powered radio with extra batteries, battery powered lanterns or flashlights with extra batteries, water for three days, a landline phone, a sufficient supply of medicines, food that does not need to be cooked, and at least a three-day supply of anything else that is necessary to you.

Should an emergency arise, listen to your local radio stations (FM 97.7, 98.3, 102.9 or AM 1690) or Channel 6 TV. Consider registering for the CodeRed System with the County Emergency Management Division by calling 410-535-1600, Ext. 2638. Register online at www.coderedweb. com⁄codereddataentry. CodeRed allows you to be notified by your local emergency response team in the event of emergency situations or critical community alerts.

Local veterans’memorabilia sought for Memory Board

The Office on Aging is collecting military photos, stories, and other memorabilia, now until the end of August, to make a 4-foot by 8-foot veteran memory board. Once completed, this board will be displayed throughout Calvert County to honor our local veterans.

You are a veteran if you served at least 180 days in the Armed Forces. You did not have to serve in a war to be a veteran. The board will first be displayed at the County Courthouse in November. If you or a family member is a veteran, drop off photos, copies of photos, stories, etc., to your local senior centers. Since this board is a tribute, photos of those veterans that are no longer with you can also be sent for display. Various workshops will be held at the local senior center to complete this project. Workshop times will be announced in the local newspapers, and workshops will be open to everyone in the community that wants to help. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Keri Lipperini, 410-535-4606 or 301-855-1170.
