Branch Avenue near Beltway set for closure this weekend

Friday, Jan. 4, 2008

The Maryland State Highway Administration is scheduled to close Branch Avenue (Route 5) at the Capital Beltway near Marlow Heights this weekend to begin a $52 million project designed to improve traffic flow in the area.

Weather permitting, crews will begin setting structural steel for the new southbound Beltway ramp that leads to southbound Branch Avenue, said Charlie Gischlar, SHA spokesman.

The steel placement will begin about 2 p.m.Saturday and will require a total closure of Route 5 between Auth Road and Manchester Drive, he said.

The closure will also include the right lane along the outer loop of the Beltway at the Route 5 interchange.

The ramp from northbound I-95 to northbound Route 5 will also be closed, Gischlar said. Motorists will not have direct access from southbound I-95⁄I-495 to southbound Route 5 during the construction.

All lanes should reopen about 5 a.m. Monday, Gischlar said this week.

The project is necessary to relieve traffic congestion at the interchange, which causes motorists to weave in and out of traffic, Gischlar said.

‘‘Now, motorists are jockeying between lanes,” he said Wednesday. ‘‘This will cut out the weaving motion of the traffic that causes congestion.”

In case of inclement weather, the project will be rescheduled for Jan. 12 through 14, Gischlar said.
