Political memorabilia exhibit continues in Piney Point

THIS ‘N' THAT

Friday, Jan. 9, 2009

The upcoming presidential inauguration has boosted interest in the Piney Point Lighthouse Museum's political memorabilia exhibit, which will continue this weekend and next weekend, from noon to 4 p.m., until it closes on Monday, Jan. 19.

The landmark is known as the Lighthouse of Presidents, for good reason.

"A couple of the presidents came here to Piney Point, Franklin Pierce and the Roosevelts," site supervisor April Havens said this week. "A couple of people who are local gave us the stuff on loan, and [more came from] a gentleman in Baltimore."

The contributions from the personal collections include presidential campaign buttons, posters, photos, newspapers and magazines. There are also some Maryland and St. Mary's County political campaign materials on display. Havens said the campaigns depicted range from 1845 to 2008.

King remembrance event set for Jan. 18

The Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions will hold its annual meeting and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18, at the Loffler Senior Activity Center off Chancellor's Run Road.

The remembrance event held after the meeting will include a tribute to the U.S. Colored Troops who fought for the Union during the Civil War; the event is part of a project to build a memorial to the military unit in St. Mary's County.

Known as the Voices of Freedom, Wesley Wilson, Chauncey Herring and Saundra Cherry will present a documentary film titled "The Forgotten Fourteen" on the Battle of New Market Heights, depicting the story of 14 USCT members including St. Mary's County Medal of Honor recipients William H. Barnes and James H. Harris. Call Janice T. Walthour at 301-862-2296 or send e-mail to ucaconline.org.
