History buffs are invited to join a new archeological society in Charles County where members will be able to volunteer to go on field trips around the state, work on a dig in Port Tobacco and attend workshops and training classes.
The Charles County chapter of the Archeological Society of Maryland was established last month, said James Gibb, owner of Gibb Archaeological Consulting in Annapolis. The first meeting of the society is set for March 11.
It is time to establish a chapter of the society in Charles County because of the large archeological dig that is taking place in the town of Port Tobacco, Gibb said. The project, begun last summer, is already uncovering a wealth of artifacts.
The establishment of the society coincides with the completion of the renovation of the 18th-century Burch house, commonly referred to as Catslide House because of its steep, sloping roof. Once the final touches are done to restore the house, the society will set up shop there for a while, Gibb said.
Members of the county’s chapter of the society will be able to attend presentations, workshops and training at the house as well as accompany Gibb on field trips to archeological sites. They will also be invited to assist in the Port Tobacco dig — a long-term project that will eventually uncover an entire Colonial city, he said.
Charles County society members will pay $5 yearly dues, but they will also be required to join the Archeological Society of Maryland at a cost of $25 a year, said Gibb, who serves as the state society’s vice president.
Everyone who has an interest in archeology is welcome to join the society, Gibb said.
