Let's say you happen to be the kind of country music listener who has never crossed over to the modern stuff. Southbound, in this case, might be your band.
Founded by Bucky Readmond of Hollywood, the five-piece band has released three CDs worth of classic country and old-time rock n' roll covers. Readmond's wife, Sue Readmond, who takes care of the booking, said that her husband founded Southbound about 20 years ago after a band he had been playing in broke up. Members range in age from 40-something to 60-something, and the lineup has remained pretty steady. "He's retired," she said, "and he constantly walks around the house singing."
These days Southbound includes steel guitarist Ray Chilton, bassist Angelo Sperseno, drummer Tom Winter and lead guitarist and keyboard player Jim McConnell. Readmond, who cites his influences as George Jones, Merle Haggard and Buck Owens, takes on rhythm guitar and lead vocals.
While the band frequently picks up gigs at veterans organizations, bars like Toot's in Hollywood and at community events around Southern Maryland, Southband occasionally ventures to Virginia. Last year the outfit performed at all three Southern Maryland county fairs.
The Web site has not been updated in a while, but you can still go to www.southboundsounds.com for a trip down memory lane, and a taste of Bob Wills-style Western swing.
