The Lions’ offense, which was haunted by turnovers, was led by quarterbacks Tyler McConnell, and Allen Spriggs had a total of 178 yards for the day.
Brandon Watson had 12 carries for 75 total yards and one catch for 10 yards. The defense and special teams stepped up to save the day.
The Lions’ first score was a stunning interception by Averill Butler on the 15-yard line, which he ran in for a touchdown.
Butler also recovered a fumble later in the game and had four tackles for the day.
Standing out on the Lions’ defense was Anthony Swann with six tackles and an assist for one sack, while Terry Barnes, Denny Williamson and Rashad Yarborough had five tackles each. Justin Kelly also had three tackles, one sack and an assist on another sack.
The Lions scored again when Donte Page returned a punt for a touchdown. Page also had two interceptions and four tackles for the day.
Travis Savoy kicked both extra points for the Lions.
The third quarter saw the Bullsharks score their second touchdown, which might have tied the score but Kelly and Donald Knight blocked the extra point.
The Lions sideline was holding its breath and sending up prayers as the Bullsharks, with 50 seconds to go in the fourth quarter, were on the Lions five-yard line and about to score, which would have sealed the game for the Bullsharks.
The prayers were answered with a faulty snap and a fumble recovery by Cedric Thomas, and the crowd went wild as the Lions won in their first home game.
The Lions had a bye last week and will travel to Cardozo High School on March 16 to play the Prince George’s County Headhunters. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
