Members of Northern High School’s Future Business Leaders of America recently raised $16,000 to donate to the Calvert Country School and The Arc of Southern Maryland. The students presented The Arc of Southern Maryland and the Calvert Country School each with checks for $8,000 for programs.

Northern High School’s Future Business Leader’s of America (FBLA) held part of its Community Service Project, a luau-themed dinner⁄auction on Jan. 21. The goal was to raise at least $10,000, with proceeds being split evenly between the Calvert Country School and The Arc of Southern Maryland.

Northern’s FBLA community service projects have had an impressive track record. In 2003-2004, FBLA raised nearly $8,000 to help the Town of North Beach rebuild and landscape the boardwalk after Hurricane Isabel destroyed it. In 2004-2005, FBLA focused on the diminishing health of the Chesapeake Bay by raising awareness throughout the community, participating in several environmental restoration projects, holding a dinner and silent auction at the Rod ‘N’ Reel, and contributing nearly $10,000 to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Northern FBLA was the first school organization to partner with CBF by donating such a large amount of money to be used towards furthering education throughout Maryland.

This year, FBLA exceeded all expectations and goals. Through the auction, dinner, raffles, donations, advanced tickets, and walk-ins, the group raised $16,000 for its recipients — 160 percent of the established goal. Each recipient, the Calvert Country School and the Arc of Southern Maryland, were awarded $8,000.

The focus at the Calvert County School is the renovation of an outside classroom. This project involves redesigning the classroom, personalizing it, and making it handicap-friendly and accessible for the students.

FBLA members have already spent time with the children at the Calvert Country School during the holiday season. Members accompanied the children on their annual shopping trip and helped them buy gifts for the holidays, and helped the staff at the school’s holiday party. FBLA also participated in the Calvert County Western Day with the students of the Calvert Country School and helped with the cookout, while assisting the teachers. FBLA has also planned luau themed activities to relate its auction to its cause.

FBLA’s financial support of The Arc of Southern Mary land will help families with handicapped or disabled members. There are currently more than 60 families in Calvert County that receive help from The Arc, but there is a waiting list of more than 350 families.

FBLA’s contribution will help to pay medical bills, purchase medical supplies, provide respite care, build access ramps, or assist Arc wherever the need is greatest.

Northern High School’s Future Business Leaders of America would like to give a special thanks to the following for the tremendous amount of help in assisting the chapter to reach its goals: The American Legion of Chesapeake Beach, Adam’s Ribs, Roland’s of Chesapeake Beach, faculty from Northern High School, Ms. Rizzo, art teacher from Northern High School, Rachel Smiroldo and Mark McCormick who wanted the focus this year to be on the Calvert Country School and The Arc of Southern Maryland, FBLA Officer Team 2005-2006, Calvert Country School, The Arc of Southern Maryland, FBLA members, and the businesses and families that donated items for the auction.
