Mill Creek Middle announces newest National Junior Honor Society members
Mill Creek Middle School National Junior Honor Society induction was Jan. 30. The National Junior Honor Society is the nations premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle school level students. More than just an honor roll NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character and Citizenship. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1929.
The current members are: Julianne Harrington (president), Lauren Bartley, Alex Case, Corey Chaconas, Connor Davies, Lexi Forster, Ellie Lake, Melanie Stangl and Tommy Volpe.
New inductees are: Alexis Balinski, Kristine Bizzarro, Katie Cox, Jessica Deloe-Caple, Jordan Hollady, Kristin Horn, Mickey Jaffee, Chelsea Kahn-Deere, Rachel Landale, Caity Madera, Chris McCormick, Emma Miller, Rebecca Protillo, Courtney Riley, Leanne Rudell, Jordan Satow, Lauren Schumacher, Megan Shipley, Heather Slavings, Kathryn Stout, Miranda Stuart, Noelle Swann, Lauren Trollinger, Lauren Tucker, Emily Vance and April Wolfe.
Cooper inducted in Phi Kappa Phi at Salisbury
Erin Cooper, daughter of William and Andrea of Owings, recently was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi international honor society at Salisbury University.
Phi Kappa Phi fosters and recognizes outstanding scholarship in students from all areas of instruction. It is the only honor society which moves across the lines that traditionally separate the diverse academic disciplines. Juniors and seniors invited to membership must rank in the upper brackets of their graduating class.
Gaines named to dean’s list at Juniata College
Kimberly Gaines of Lusby was among the 319 students named to the dean’s list at Juniata College for the 2005 fall semester. The dean’s list recognizes grade point averages of at least 3.6 out of a possible 4.0.
Gaines is a senior studying elementary and early childhood education. Gaines is the daughter of Tiffany and Jay Gaines and is a 2003 graduate of Patuxent High School.
Juniata College is a private, liberal arts college located in Huntingdon, Pa. With an enrollment of 1,400, Juniata is a community dedicated to providing the highest quality liberal arts education.
Thompson named to dean’s list at Frostburg
Kenneth Thompson of Prince Frederick has been named to the dean’s list at Frostburg State University for outstanding academic achievement for the fall 2005 semester.
Thompson is a senior majoring in music education, and graduates in May of this year.
To be eligible for the dean’s list, a student must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours and earn a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.
Calvert students place in MathCounts competition
More than 100 students from Southern Maryland middle schools tested their computation skills at the 12th annual MathCounts competition held at Mechanicsville Elementary School on Saturday, Feb. 4. During the three-hour competition, the students tackled challenging mathematics problems in a series of exciting rounds.
For the team competition, Leonardtown Middle School in St. Mary’s County came in first: team members included, C.J. Culpepper, Alison Devine, Tony Oblen and Kelly Turner, coached by Richard Condel.
Margaret Brent Middle School in St. Mary’s County placed second: team members included, Brian Heidelbach, Michelle Lent, James Montgomery and Brody Smith, coached by Kevin Mackall.
Esperanza Middle School in St. Mary’s County came in third: team members included, Nick Brown, Tanner Kellogg, Peter Offenbacher and Alex Wincelowitz, coached by Craig Modrzejewski.
Northern Middle School in Calvert County placed fourth: team members included, Eric Butler, Samantha Jones, Keegan Lee and Eric Stubblefield, coached by Judy Haines.
Plum Point Middle School in Calvert County came in fifth: team members included, Ben Arochio, Christina Malliakos, Shaj Mathew and Conner Muilenburg, coached by Peg Blacker.
In the countdown rounds, C.J. Culpepper of Leonardtown Middle School placed first and Eric Butler of Northern Middle School placed second.
During the target and sprint rounds, students competed to see who could score highest on their individual test. During these exams, Conner Muilenburg of Plum Point Middle School placed first and Keegan Lee of Northern Middle School placed second.
The local MathCounts competition is sponsored by Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative and the Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s County school systems, with the support of the Society of Professional Engineers. Winners of the Southern Maryland chapter competition will go on to compete in the statewide contest. State winners will progress to the national competition in Washington, D.C.
Hance, Walter-Sherbert selected as National Merit Scholarship finalists
Principal George Miller recently announced that two Northern High School seniors were selected as National Merit Scholarship finalists. They are Benjamin Hance and Christopher Walter-Sherbert. Hance and Walter-Sherbert were selected from a highly competitive field of 16,000 semi-finalists nationally. The determination of Merit Scholarship winners is now in progress. Merit Scholarship winners will be notified in March.
Calvert students named to dean’s list at Salisbury
Thirteen Calvert County area residents have been named to the Dean’s List at Salisbury University for the fall 2005 semester.
Huntingtown area residents include: Amy Allen, Kristyn Jeschelnik, Shannon McGuire, Haley Miller and Alyssa Wallis.
Owings area residents include Erin Cooper and Katie Gibson.
Prince Frederick area residents include Carina Briggs, Patricia Fincham and Jenni Weems.
Other area residents include Benjamin Miller of Dunkirk, Stephanie Dargan of Port Republic, and Katelyn Rozenbroek of Sunderland.
