(Breaking news) Vandalism closes Elms Beach Park

Posted at 4:49 p.m. FridayP> Due to extensive vandalism, Elms Beach Park in Dameron is closed, St. Mary's County officials announced Friday.

Vandals used a stolen excavator on March 17 to destroy the metal gate leading into the park, playground equipment, picnic pavilion and a changing station building, according to a statement from county government.

The facilities are being repaired and the park should reopen within the month, according to the statement.

Elms Beach Park is one of 19 county parks. It is located on 476 acres and contains a playground, picnic tables and a picnic pavilion.

Normally citizens can use the waterfront park for fishing and crabbing and the beach.

County officials urged anyone with information on this crime is asked to call Crime Solvers. The caller does not have to leave his or her name. If the information leads to the arrest and conviction, the caller may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000. The Crime Solvers number is 301-475-3333.
