Knowing this, the Lions prepared well in practice, hitting hard and working on holding on to the ball. It started off big in their first contest against the Headhunters, a 31-0 shutout victory.
The Lions’ offense, led by Tyler McConnell, scored four of the five touchdowns, with no interceptions or fumbles.
On the first drive of the game, McConnell handed the ball off to Delandre Rosier, who broke free and ran in the first touchdown of the day. Then, with the Headhunters on their own 10-yard line, Denny Williamson jumped up for the interception and ran it in for the Lions’ second touchdown. In the second quarter, Brandon Watson ran in another touchdown and the Lions would lead 19-0 at the half.
The Headhunters definitely stepped it up for the second half, but the Lions defense would not let them into the end zone, stopping them twice on the Lions’ 8-yard line. Averill Butler forced two fumbles, had one sack and one fumble recovery. Devonte Williams had two tackles and deflected passes and got the interception he’d been after which he ran for 20 yards.
Cedric Thomas stood out with three sacks, three tackles and one forced fumble. Donald Knight had six tackles and assisted Justin Kelly to sack the Headhunters’ quarterback. Kelly also deflected a pass and forced a fumble. Patrick Herron, Travis McConnell and Terry Barnes all haunted the Headhunters with three or more tackles each.
The Lions’ scored twice in the second half on passes by Tyler McConnell to Greg Bowman in the third quarter and Curtis Harris in the fourth. The Lions’ offense had 115 yards rushing and 154 yards passing for a total of 269 yards total offense. It was an all around great day for both the offense and the defense.
The Lions will play the Newcastle County Eagles at home, Chaney Field aka ‘The Lions’ Den’ on Sub-Station Rd. in Waldorf at 2 p.m. Saturday.
