Friday, March 28, 2008

The Charles County Lions met the Newcastle County Eagles at the Lions’ home field on March 22 and came away with their second shutout of the season.

The Lions offense had a total of 419 yards for the day. Tyler McConnell completed six of eight passes for a total of 132 yards with three touchdowns; two passing scores going to Travis Savoy and Curtis Harris and he ran one in from the 1-yard line. Brandon Watson rushed for two touchdowns and had 100 yards for the day.

The Lions rushed for a total of 287 yards. Delandre Rosier averaged 10 yards per carry, rushing 40 yards on four carries. Savoy kicked three extra points, missing one, and McConnell ran the ball in for a two-point conversion on a bobbled snap.

The Lions’ defense held the Eagles scoreless. There were three quarterback sacks, one by TJ Riley and two by Justin Kelly. Brandon Reece had a great day with five tackles, while Dennis Williamson and Rashad Yarborough each had four.

The season so far has been an easy one, however the Lions are about to have their biggest challenge this year. They will travel Saturday to Dover High School in Dover, Del. to play the Sussex County Punishers, who are also undefeated and have not been scored upon this year at all.

The Lions will also host the Punishers at home, Chaney Field on Sub-Station Road in Waldorf at 2 p.m. April 5. On the Minor League Football News Web site, the Lions ranked 19th out of the top 50 teams, while the Punishers are seventh. Both of these games are sure to be nail biters.

The Charles County Lions will be having a food drive during its next two home games. Bring canned goods to the Lion Pride stand at the game. These will be donated to the WM Lord Led Ministry which feeds up to 40 Charles County families each week.
