(Breaking news) Pedestrian dies after being struck by car

A Waldorf woman died Friday after a car struck her as she crossed the street, according to police.

Sara Laureen Smith, 44, was walking across the Smallwood Drive West near St. Patrick's Drive in Waldorf when a Mitsubishi Galant hit her, said Diane Richardson, spokeswoman for the Charles County Sheriff's Office.

A preliminary investigation has found that Smith wasn't in a crosswalk and was wearing dark clothing at the time of the accident, Richardson said. The driver of the Mitsubishi stayed on the scene, and police responded at 8:24 p.m.

Smith was transported to Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly, where she died. The driver wasn't injured in the collision, according to Richardson.

The sheriff's office is still investigating the accident.
