A Waldorf mother of four died Friday night when a car struck her as she crossed the street, according to police.
Sara Laureen Smith, 44, was walking across Smallwood Drive West near St. Patrick's Drive in Waldorf when a Mitsubishi Galant hit her, said Diane Richardson, Charles County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman.
Smith was not in a crosswalk and was wearing dark clothing at the time of the accident, police reported after a preliminary investigation.
The driver of the Mitsubishi wasn't injured in the collision and stayed on the scene, according to Richardson.
Police responded to the accident at 8:24 p.m. Smith was transported to Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly, where she died a few hours later.
No criminal charges have been filed in connection with the incident, and the investigation is ongoing, Richardson reported.
Smith was a mother of four children ranging from 16 to 24 and worked as a sales associate at a clothing store in St. Charles Towne Center. At the time of her death, Smith was taking classes to get a General Education Development certificate.
"Everyone that met her loved her," said her mother, Linda Hudson.
Smith was an easy-going woman, who giggled when she was nervous and "didn't want for a whole lot," Hudson said. Her hopes and dreams were simple: She wanted to visit Jamaica, rent her own apartment and win when she gambled.
Hudson also remembered that Smith loved cooking for a crowd. Last Easter, when Smith invited relative after relative over to eat, Hudson was unsure about her daughter's ability to feed everyone.
"I said, What, you think [you're] Jesus? We got one pack of chops.' She said she wouldn't eat, and I was like, Still, girl, count,'" Hudson said.
But somehow, Smith pulled it off. "Don't ask me how she did it, but she did. Everybody got a plate," Hudson said.
Smith was coming from a trip to the store to buy cigarettes when she was hit by the car, according to Hudson.
Her funeral will be held at Kingdom Baptist Church in Waldorf, where she was a member.
Smith is the third pedestrian killed in a Charles County car accident this year.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 301-932-3015. Officer R.E. Glover is handling the investigation.
