Smith wins award
The Boston chapter of the Industrial Designers Society of America recently awarded its Student Merit Award to Cory Smith of Port Tobacco.
Smith is a senior majoring in industrial design at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. Industrial designers determine the way a mass-produced product looks, feels and how well it functions. They use a variety of methods to design products, from sketches to clay or foam moldings, to computer programs such as CAD.
Smith presented his portfolio, representing his work over the past four years, to a panel of industrial design professionals. One winner is chosen at each of the 45 universities nationwide offering the industrial design major. Smith’s projects included redesigning a television remote control, the creation of a marker holder, the re-design of a cheese grater for Calphalon, as well as a self-directed project of creating and building a wire cutter for use in making models. The applicants were judged on the scope of their work, the quality of work, quality of thought, visual presentation and verbal presentation.
Smith went on to represent Wentworth at the IDSA Northeast District Conference in Philadelphia, which included student Merit Award representatives from Massachusetts College of Art, Rochester Institiute of Technology,Syracuse University, Philadelphia University, and seven other universities.
As a requirement for graduation, Smith has completed two paid internships in Boston, at Proteus Design and Manta Product Development Inc.
He has also interned at ProtoCAD Corp. in La Plata. He will graduate in August with a bachelor of science degree in industrial design.
