Free smoking essation program to be offered
A free six-week smoking cessation program begins Wednesday, May 6, at the St. Mary's County Health Department in Leonardtown. Classes meet once a week from 6 to 7 p.m. and participants can receive free Nicoderm patches or free Chantix. Call 301-475-4297 to register. Participants must be 18.
Stuff a bus full of food donations
On Saturday, May 2, residents may donate food to fill up county transit buses. Buses will be open for donations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Food Lion stores in Charlotte Hall and Callaway, the Giant store in California, McKay's Food and Drug in Leonardtown and Wildewood and the Walmart Supercenter in California. The donations will be delivered to pantries and food banks throughout St. Mary's. Donation suggestions are canned goods and nonperishable foods that do not need cooking. Discuss plans for new parks
On Thursday, May 7, the recreation and parks advisory board will meet to present concept plans and to gather input for the Carver Heights Community Park and the south parcel of Lancaster Park. The meeting will be held at the Carver Recreation Center in Lexington Park and starts at 6 p.m. Items under consideration are memorials, a playground, picnic areas, nature trails, an athletic field, walkways, a basketball court, parking and restroom facilities.
