Susan Marie "Susie" Spalding, 48, of Dentsville died April 22, 2009, at Johns Hopkins Medical Center, Baltimore.
She attended Archbishop Neale School and graduated from St. Mary's Academy in Leonardtown.
She was an active member of the Charles County Volunteer Rescue Squad since 1980. She was a life member, serving in numerous capacities over the years including president, captain and chief. She had served as a delegate to the Charles County Association of Emergency Medical Services, the executive committee and the Southern Maryland Volunteer Association. She was the county EMS chief from 2002 to 2004.
She was the recipient of many community service awards over the years, including the Greater Waldorf Jaycees' Distinguished Service Award. She was employed by the Charles County government for over 25 years and was a supervisor for the 911 center. She was passionate about her rescue dogs Pip and Jada. She was an incredible woman of strength and love.
Born April 4, 1961, in La Plata, she was the daughter of the late Charles F. Spalding and Irene A. Spalding.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her sister, Linda Lee Spalding.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her brothers, Chuck and his wife, Joanne of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Rocky and his wife, Kim of Golden Beach; nephew, Matthew Spalding; and nieces, Hillary and Megan Spalding.
Visitation and prayers were held April 26 at Sacred Heart Church, La Plata, where Mass was celebrated April 27. The Rev. Ron Potts officiated. Burial took place at the church cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Charles County Rescue Squad or the Sacred Heart Church Cemetery Fund.
Arrangements are being handled by Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, La Plata.
