Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Laurel Grove will be holding a drive-through dinner on May 3 from noon to 5 p.m.
The menu will consist of fried chicken, country ham, parsley potatoes, green beans, pickled beets, cole slaw and applesauce. The cost is $15.

The 15th Annual Southern Maryland Spring Festival sponsored by Holy Face Catholic Church will be held May 1 to 4 at the St. Mary’s County fairgrounds.
Come support this great event and enjoy a variety of great entertainment, music, crafts, carnival rides, a parade, car show, great food and much more.

On May 17, the St. Mary’s Nursing Center Foundation will hold its annual Preakness Party and silent auction at the Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department social hall.
Proceeds from the event will help the foundation purchase items to enhance the quality of life of the residents at St. Mary’s Nursing Center in Leonardtown.
Tickets cost $75 and include hors d’oeuvres, open bar, black jack, race betting and a buffet prepared by the Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

The St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary will hold their next meeting on May 9 at 1:30 p.m. at the St. Mary’s Hospital.
All members and those men and women who wish to become members, are encouraged to attend.
Still available at the circulation desk of your local public library, ‘‘300 years of Black Cooking in St. Mary’s County,” is being sold to raise money for library programs.

Our area was saddened recently to learn of the loss of a fine county resident. Marilyn Cecilia Ridgell, 82, passed away at her home in Mechanicsville.
My brother, Charles, joins me in extending the deepest sympathy to her devoted husband, Gregory T. ‘‘Brother” Ridgell of Mechanicsville; her daughter, Diane Ridgell of Leonardtown; a host of other family members and to her many friends.
The family has requested that memorial contributions be made in her name to Hospice House, c⁄o Hospice of St. Mary’s, P.O. Box 625, Leonardtown, MD 20650; and⁄or the Alzheimer’s Association, Southern Maryland Office, P.O. Box 1889, La Plata, MD 20646.
Mark your calendar. The Sixth Annual Plant Sale at Summerseat Farm in Mechanicsville will be held on Saturday, May 10.
They always have a very large selection of reasonably priced plants and flowers. The sale is just in time for Mother’s Day.
The Hollywood Volunteer Rescue Squad will sponsor a yard sale on June 7 at the squad building from 7 to 11 a.m.

Friends, I urge you to stop by the gift shop at St. Mary’s Hospital which is operated by the St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary. The shop is located in the main lobby of the hospital and they offer a very large selection of items to choose from.
The selection includes lovely inexpensive cards for all occasions, flowers, angels, stuffed animals, jewelry, candy, books, religious items and the St. Mary’s Hospital edition of the Cat’s Meow and much, much more.
I would like to extend a birthday greeting to two very special people. David Warring and his daughter, Shannon Warring, of Mechanicsville are both celebrating their birthdays on May 4.
