The Charles County Lions semi-pro football team traveled to Suitland High School on April 25 for a rematch against the Prince George's Knights.
In the first meeting, the Lions defense held the Knights to only 92 yards but the Knights did put up the first six points against the Lions this season. But in sweltering 98-degree heat on April 25, the Lions picked up a 7-6 victory.
In the second quarter, a 13-yard pass put the Knights in the end zone for their first and only score of the day, 6-0. The Knights went for the two-point conversion, but were stopped by Lions defenders Cedric Thomas, Averill Butler, Clyde Jones and Rashad Yarborough.
The Lions' next possession ended in an interception and the Knights' next possession ended when Butler stripped the ball for Jones to recover.
The Lions went four and out, then the Knights went for it on fourth down at the 30. A pass to the goal line was intercepted by Lions' Derrick Manning. The Lions downed the ball to end the half with the Knights leading 6-0 at halftime.
The Lions kicked off to the Knights to start the second half. It was second down and 15 on their own 48 when Thomas Connally intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards, putting the Lions on the 18.
This set up the Lions' only score of the day as a pass from Tyler McConnell to Greg Bowman resulted in a touchdown. Kiante Webb kicked the extra point, which was good and the Lions led 7-6.
Neither team could accomplish much offensively for the rest of the game, punting and trading interceptions and fumbles.
The Knights' last possession of the game looked optimistic as they drove down the field for 20 yards, but a pass went straight to Lions defensive back Cameron Fuller.
This game was a real defensive battle, with neither offense being able to accomplish much.
The Lions offense threw four interceptions and had one fumble, while the Knights offense threw four interceptions and fumbled the ball three times.
Standouts on the Lions defense were Fuller with two interceptions, while Manning and Connally each had one. Thomas, Jones and Joey Williamson each recovered fumbles.
Thomas had eight tackles, three for losses, and two sacks, while Butler had nine tackles, one for loss, and one sack and Jones had nine tackles, four for losses, and one sack. Travis McConnell had five tackles, while Yarborough had four, two for losses, and Williamson had three tackles, one for loss, and one sack.
The Lions' next game will be at The Lion's Den, also known as Chaney Field on Sub-Station Road in Waldorf at 2 p.m. Saturday against the Baltimore Bulls.
Lions shut out
Waynesboro
The 0-4 Waynesboro Tigers traveled several hours from Pennsylvania on April 18 to take on the 4-0 Charles County Lions. The game, unfortunately for the Tigers, can be summed up by those records.
It was a great day for the Lions but a not so good one for the Tigers as the Lions won, 79-0.
The Lions deferred to the second half so the game began with the 55-yard kickoff to the Tigers by Travis Savoy. The Tigers' first play was a 35-yard pass thrown directly to Lions linebacker Donald Knight and five plays later the Lions scored their first touchdown of the day. It was that kind of day for the Tigers.
The Lions scored on all but two offensive possessions. The scores were from a run for eight yards by Brandon Watson, a 25-yard pass to DeVonte Williams, a 12-yard pass to Bowman, a five-yard run by Watson, a one-yard run by Tyler McConnell, a 21-yard run by Dwight Savoy, a 10-yard run by Clyde Jones, a four-yard run by Watson, and a 10-yard run after a 48-yard drive by new Lions running back Marco Carter. Williams returned the kick after halftime for 80 yards, scoring another touchdown.
The Lions offense, led by quarterbacks Tyler McConnell and Allen Spriggs, had a total offense of 413 yards with 137 yards passing and 276 yards rushing.
Highlights on the defense were interceptions by Knight, Connally and Jones, fumbles forced by Travis McConnell, Thomas and Williamson which were recovered by, respectively, Will Johnson, Knight, who ran six yards for a touchdown, and Thomas, who also ran five yards for a touchdown.
Terrell Poe also recovered a fumble, while Earl Monroe, Jay Bonds and Williamson each deflected passes. Webb had three tackles, as did Derrick Manning, Troy Ferrell and Ambrose Anderson. Having four or more tackles were Thomas, Jones, Justin Mika, Justin Kelly and Williamson.
