When the Beach Business Group comes up with an idea, members move on it.

The Beach Trolley idea was realized last year, and this year, the group has made the "Taste of the Beaches" cookbook a reality.

Last Friday night the group got together for a book launch at Herrington Harbour in Rose Haven where recipe contributors, BBG members and the public were invited to sample recipes from the book while socializing in a beach-themed room overlooking the marina.

BBG consists of both Chesapeake and North Beach businesses.

About three months ago BBG member Norma Robertson came up with the idea and the BBG formed a committee to see the idea through, said Linda Wood, the committee's chair. The eight-member committee solicited recipes and they came pouring in from the community.

The cookbook is a combination of recipes and a tour guide with pictures, history and cultural information about the Twin Beaches, said Lyn Striegel, BBG's president.

"It becomes a keepsake," she said, and "makes a great Christmas gift."

Completing the project so quickly is "a tribute to Linda, but she wouldn't say so," Striegel said. Wood, who is a cookbook collector, kept everyone on track, she said.

"There couldn't have been a more appropriate person on this," Striegel said in a speech that thanked all those involved with the cookbook and recognized dignitaries at the event.

The hardcover colorful cookbook includes 375 recipes with a children's section that includes illustrations created by children from the Bayside Boys & Girls Club under the guidance of local artist Gary Pendleton.

One dollar from each book sale will be donated to the Bayside Boys & Girls Club and the remainder of the proceeds will be used to support and promote local business in the Beaches, Striegel said.

Chesapeake Beach photographer Bob Tinari donated photographs he had taken of Chesapeake Bay area scenes and local events. Each tab has a photograph from around the Beaches and cultural and historical information is on the back of the page, Striegel said.

"I was happy to donate my photographs to the cause. It's my way of giving back to BBG," Tinari said.

Committee member Pat Carpenter, who owns Celebrations!, an event planning business, decorated all the tables at the book launch with centerpieces of photographs from the book, ceramic lighthouses and fish, netting and sprinkles of colorful sea glass.

"We're so proud to have so many talented people," Striegel said.

Committee member Leanne Githens said both she and her teenage son contributed five recipes.

Cucumber salad, seared scallops with Asian lime chili sauce and fried oyster po'boy were a few of the cookbook recipes at the tasting, cooked by Herrington Harbour chefs.

And for dessert, along with a cake donated by Sweet Sue's Bake Shop of North Beach, North Beach Mayor Mike Bojokles' peach cobbler and Suzy Pugh's Indian coffee cake were offered.

People stood in line Friday to order the cookbooks at a discounted price from committee members who were draped with colorful aprons. Committee members were assigned individual tasks in creating the cookbook and included Diane Burr, Pat Carpenter, Hilary Dailey, Githens, Joanie Kilmon, Bob Munroe, Gary Pendleton, Norma Robertson, Striegel and Woods.

The book can still be preordered for $17.99 from the Calvert County Library Twin Beaches Branch, or through BBG's Web site at www.beachbusinessgroup.com.

When the cookbook is published in July, it will be available at the North Beach Friday Night Farmer's Market, at local businesses around the Twin Beaches and the Twin Beaches Library for $19.99.
