Hattie Bowen ‘‘Bowenie” Crown, 93, of Prince Frederick died April 19, 2008, at Calvert County Nursing Center, where she had resided since 2004.
She was born Dec. 23, 1914, in Frazier.
She attended the former Solomons School and worked in her youth as a crab picker in Solomons Island. She married Fenton W. Crown Jr. on Sept. 19, 1936, and they made their home and raised their family in Southeast Washington, D.C. She was a homemaker, and was known to be an excellent cook. She also enjoyed flower gardening. Her husband died Sept. 30, 1982, and she moved back to Calvert County in 1994.
She is survived by her son, Meredith Ward ‘‘Mert” Crown and his wife, Joan; and her daughter, Lorraine E. Perkins. She was the grandmother of Timmy, Jimmy and Joey Perkins, Michelle Thacker and Laurie Jackson, and is also survived by eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel E. and Hattie Bowen Ward; her brothers, Elmer, William, Fletcher, Walter and Frank Ward; and her sisters, Marie Ward and Nettie Lusby.
A service was held April 24 at Rausch Funeral Home in Owings. The Rev. Patricia L. Sebring officiated. Interment took place at Washington National Cemetery in Suitland. Pallbearers were Craig Ringler, T.J. Thacker, Michael Jackson, Joseph Perkins, Timothy Perkins Sr., and Timothy Perkins Jr. Honorary pallbearer was Roger Thacker.
