Youth football coaches needed

La Plata Blue Knights youth football is looking for one football coach for its 70-pound team for the 2008 season. Applicants must be able to work well with children, have a team philosophy and a clean background check.

CSM golf tournament

The College of Southern Maryland Foundation hosts the third annualÊVeteran’s and Law Enforcement Golf TournamentÊMay 9 at 7:30 a.m. at Cedar Point Golf Course at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station.

The tournament raises funds to support the Veteran’s Educational Endowment Fund, which provides scholarships to veterans of the armed services majoring in law enforcement, homeland security or criminal justice at CSM.

Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. and the shotgun start follows at 9 a.m. The fee is $150 per golfer, which includes breakfast and lunch.

Shockers trip

The Southern Maryland Shockers 16-U fastpitch softball team is sponsoring a bus trip to Atlantic City on May 10.

The cost of the trip is $55 per person with $25 being returned in cash and food vouchers. The bus departs from the Mattawoman Park and Ride at 7:30 a.m. and picks up at the Wayson’s Corner Park and Ride at 8 a.m. To reserve your seat, call Mike Garner at 301-542-3938.

Softball coaches, umpires wanted

The new Southern Maryland ASA Youth fast-pitch softball program being administered by Hughesville Baseball and Softball Association is looking for additional coaches and umpires. This association will serve all of Southern Maryland and offers regular season and All-Star play. Coaches and umpires are needed for players ages 6 through 16. Junior Olympic skills competition

A Junior Olympic skills competition will be held at 9 a.m. May 10 at Wade Community Center. This free grassroots youth participation program allows boys and girls, competing separately, the opportunity to showcase their athletic abilities in four athletic events: basketball, soccer, tennis and track and field. It is designed to encourage youth participation in sports while promoting sportsmanship.

Registration begins atÊ9 a.m. with soccer and tennis starting at 10 a.m. and theÊbasketball and trackÊand field portion begins atÊnoon. Champions from this local qualifying event will advance to one of the regional competitions across the country in hopes of advancing to the national finals.

Open to boys and girls age 8 to 13. Age classifications are based upon the participant’s age as of Aug. 31, 2007.

Long and Fostergolf tournament

Long and Foster presents its fifth annual Charity Golf Tournament on May 22 at White Plains Regional Park and Golf Course, benefitting the Southern Maryland Chapter of the American Red Cross.

It’s a captain’s choice event that tees off at 8:30 a.m. There will be longest drive, closest-to-the-pin and hole-in-one contests as well. Sponsorships are also available.

Middle schoolsbasketball tournament

Twenty-two teams from the Charles County middle schools compete for the 2008 basketball championship.

The tournament starts May 16 at Thomas Stone and Smallwood fromÊ6 to 9 p.m. It will continue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Thomas Stone and from 2 to 6 p.m. at Lackey on May 17.

The championship will be held at Thomas Stone from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 18. This event is sponsored in part by Chick-Fil-A.

Children’s societygolf tournament

The Charles County Children’s Aid Society will be holding its fifth annual golf tournament on May 16 at Swan Point Yacht and Country Club.

Registration for the captain’s choice event begins at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

Contests will be held for closest to the pin, putting, longest drive and more, including a $10,000 hole-in-one on all par 3s.

Heritage Bike Ride

The Department of Community Services and the Nanjemoy Community Center sponsor Charles County’s seventh annual Heritage Bike Ride on May 17.

Check in is 7:30 to 9:30 a.m., and the last run is at 3 p.m. Riders ages 10 to 15 must be accompanied by a paying adult and may only ride the 25k route.

There are three recreational routes to choose from: 100k, 50k or 25k. Each route begins and ends at the Nanjemoy Community Center. Refreshments, sag wagons, and rest stops are included. Helmets are required for all riders.

A free T-shirt is available to all who register by May 9. For those registering after that date, T-shirts will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Pat Collins Golf Classic

The Arc of Southern Maryland is pleased to announce the sixth annual Pat Collins Golf Classic, which will be held May 22 at Twin Shields Golf Club in Dunkirk.

The cost is $150 per player or $600 per team, and sponsorship opportunities are available as well. Proceeds from the tournament will be used to provide support to individuals with developmental disabilities.
