Willard honored by United States Power Squadrons Friday, May 9, 2008
Past District Education Officer Harold Willard of the Patuxent River Sail and Power Squadron, center, accepts his award as National Teacher of the Year by the United States Power Squadrons in ceremonies at the USPS annual meeting in Dallas earlier this year. The award was made by Chief Cmdr. Ernest G. Marshburn and McGraw-Hill’s Mark Trosino. As as result of the award, Willard’s name will be permanently inscribed at USPS headquarters in Raleigh, N.C. McGraw-Hill is also presenting his squadron with gifts, including a multimedia projector and a precision sextant for use in navigation courses. For the past two years McGraw Hill has sponsored this award in recognition of the central role played by USPS in boating education. Willard was among five top instructors selected from across the nation. He has been a squadron member for 24 years, teaching instructor development, seamanship, advanced piloting and public boating safety courses. He is also a member of the USPS National Curriculum Development Committee. The nominations for this award considered more than 6,000 volunteer instructors within USPS’s 450 squadrons. Supporting documents were presented by students and fellow members. One student wrote that Willard’s ‘‘... depth of knowledge and humor are the perfect mix for a highly successful teacher.”
