A difficult month for me

Friday, May 9, 2008

Leonardtown softball player Kirsten Olson does not want the season to end, not simply for the softball aspect, but for the fact that she is not ready to lose her senior teammates.

However, life does go on, and life for Olson’s shoulder is not good at this point in time. She will require surgery.

Read on as Olson describes this difficult month of May.

JAMES A. McCRAY III

Dear Diary,

School is almost over, which is good in some ways but bad in others. It’s bad because it just means that finals for all of my classes are coming up and that the softball season is almost over.

Last week against Thomas Stone [April 30] was our senior night and it made me realize how much I am going to miss our seniors, Kara Sapp, Eli Gaston, Katie Currie and Sara Greenwell.

Next season is going to be an entirely different year, because instead of me having someone to look up to, others will be looking up to me. I will have to set the example for others.

This only being my second season playing softball, it is kind of scary considering I do not know about everything there is to know about softball. Also, losing some of your best friends is not always the most pleasant feeling. Kara is always there for me when I need someone to talk to and when I need advice on what to do, whether it is about softball or life in general. It is definitely going to be a lot more difficult.

On Thursday [May 1], we faced Chopticon, who we are big rivals with. We beat them 7-2.

We got the day off on Friday and Saturday, which was pretty relaxing for my teammates but not so much for me. While others were going to prom I went to a basketball tournament for my AAU team.

It was difficult playing with the amount of substitutes we had, which was two. We played hard, but unfortunately did not win the tournament. However, the tournament prior to that one we got first place.

I went to the doctor again on Monday at Bethesda. It seems like every time I go to the doctor they find something else wrong with me.

Now not only have I torn my labral and possibly rotator cuff, they told me they’ve found something else involving my glenoid. I may have to have a different surgery that may cause more pain. It involves correcting the abnormalities dealing with my bone structure. My surgery is scheduled for May 30.

Due to this doctor’s appointment, I was not able to play in the Westlake game [May 6]. We played well and hit the ball well. In the middle of the game, a helicopter decided it was going to land on the field. After that brief interference, we were able to continue playing. We ended up winning 13-1.

Well I have to go to math class now. Talk to you soon!

Sincerely,

Kirsten Olson
