Driver hits trooper, charged with DWI

After allegedly running a red light Tuesday morning on St. Charles Parkway, a 34-year-old driver struck a Maryland State Police cruiser, pushing it into a dump truck.

According to police reports, Leonardo Guzman Norvaez was driving a 1990 Volvo at about 9:24 a.m. when he allegedly didn’t stop at a red light and tried to make a left turn but ended up striking the cruiser driven by trooper K. Hunt, 25, of La Plata.

Hunt’s vehicle was then pushed into a 1988 Ford dump truck driven by Clarence Thompson, 64, of Waldorf.

Norvaez was allegedly found to be intoxicated and was charged with driving while intoxicated and numerous traffic violations.

He was taken by helicopter to Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly for injuries that are not life-threatening.

Hunt was taken by ambulance to Civista Medical Center in La Plata where he was treated and released.

Thompson was not injured in the collision.

Traffic stopleads to drug arrest

An 18-year-old Waldorf man was stopped by Cpl. T. Quade for a traffic violation at 7:45 p.m. on St. Charles Parkway, north of St. Mark’s Drive in Waldorf.

According to police reports, James Timothy Gray had a bag of pills on the front seat of the vehicle, which Quade saw when he approached the car.

Gray was arrested and charged with possession of Percocet.

Four teens in accident

While patrolling Crain Highway in the early morning hours of May 3, Trooper J. Wilson tried to stop a car for a traffic violation at 2:01 a.m. However, the car, driven by Jonathan Nathaniel Robinson, 18, of Washington, D.C., did not stop.

While attempting to elude police, Wilson’s vehicle hit an embankment, went airborne, overturned and skidded about 350 feet before coming to rest on its roof.

In addition to Robinson, three other 18-year-olds were in the vehicle.

Shade Shantaw Kelly, Monique Loreal Walton and Tamika Avis Speight, all of Washington, D.C., sustained injuries but none were considered life-threatening. Robinson was taken by helicopter to Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly. He was charged with reckless endangerment and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Drugs foundduring stop

During a routine patrol May 4 on Route 210 near Chapman’s Landing Road, trooper R. Lemerise stopped a 54-year-old Indian Head man for a traffic violation at 7:49 p.m.

According to police, a search revealed Richard Joseph Bercier was allegedly in possession of marijuana. He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Marijuana arrest

A traffic stop at 8:13 p.m. May 4 in Waldorf ended with a 51-year-old White Plains man being charged with possession of marijuana.

Cpl. T. Quade stopped Michael Wayne Kelly for a traffic violation on southbound U.S. 301, south of Smallwood Drive for a traffic violation.

A search found that Kelly was allegedly intoxicated and in possession of two marijuana cigarettes.

He was charged with drug possession and driving under the influence.

Traffic violationleads to drug arrest

While conducting a traffic stop at 8:08 p.m. May 6 on U.S. 301, trooper W. Posey found a baggie of marijuana in the vehicle being driven by Joe Nathan Springfield, 37, of Alexandria, Va.

Springfield was charged with driving under the influence, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Car trouble leadsto drug arrest

Trooper W. Posey was on routine patrol around 6:45 p.m. May 6 on northbound U.S. 301 when he noticed a disabled vehicle. As he approached the car, Posey smelled marijuana. He spoke to one of the vehicle’s occupants who told the trooper that they were having car trouble and while waiting for help to arrive, others who were in the car walked to nearby Checkers restaurant. Posey called a Charles County sheriff’s officer and asked that those at the restaurant be held until more information could be gathered. When a sheriff’s officer approached Jermaine Devon Thomas, 28, of Hughesville, Thomas attempted to flee.

Thomas was knocked to the ground after a brief struggle and marijuana allegedly fell out of his pocket. He was arrested for marijuana possession and possession of crack cocaine.

Truck thieves escape

Sheriff’s officer J. Walter saw a Ford truck speeding on Smallwood Drive near Stone Avenue in Waldorf at 10:04 p.m. May 5.

He tried to stop the truck but the driver kept going. As the officer followed the truck, police communications officers told Walter it had been reported stolen through the Prince George’s County Police Department. The truck turned onto Keepsake Place where it struck a small tree. The two people in the truck fled the vehicle on foot but left the truck in drive. The truck continued moving until it struck a mailbox. Officers, including a police dog team, searched the area but were unable to locate the suspects. The suspects were described as two black men with dreadlocks. They were wearing blue jeans and white polo shirts with red or pink stripes.

Robbery victimroughed up

Sheriff’s officers went to the AMC Loews movie theater at 11115 Mall Circle in Waldorf to investigate a strong-arm robbery at 9:42 p.m. May 5.

They found that an 18-year-old Waldorf man was walking through the parking lot when two men approached him, beat him up and stole his money. The men fled the scene in a silver mid-1990s passenger car with black fenders. The victim described the men as black, in their early 20s. One man is between 6 feet and 6 feet 2 inches tall, has dreadlocks and was wearing a black jacket with a red spider on the upper back. The other man is about 5 feet 10 inches tall and was wearing dark clothing.

The victim sustained minor injuries.

Burglars enter homethrough sliding door

Sometime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. April 22, someone broke into a house in the 10900 block of West Point Place in White Plains through the rear sliding glass door. Once inside thieves stole a television, an Xbox 360 gaming system and a laptop computer.
