Teen is indicted in burglary spree

Grand jury says 18-year-old did six burglaries; police continue probe

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

A teenager was recently indicted in six separate burglary cases that charge him with swiping more than $20,000 worth of valuables from homes in Waldorf.

Police arrested Carterrys Abednega Morgan, 18, of Waldorf on April 3 after a witness saw someone matching his description acting suspiciously around a Tanglewood Drive residence, according to court documents.

The witness reported that at about 10:30 a.m., a man wearing all black jumped a fence into the backyard of a townhome and then walked up to a sliding glass door.

The witness, who told police that he believed the man was going to break into the home, opened the door of the residence. The man was startled and fled the yard, according to court papers.

The witness later identified Morgan as the person he saw acting suspiciously, and police arrested the 18-year-old, court records state.

Investigators had already been monitoring Morgan as a suspect in a string of Waldorf break-ins, and after the arrest, they obtained a search warrant of the teen's home. Inside Morgan's room, police discovered a stash of camcorders, cell phones, laptops and other electronics piled on the floor or stuffed under the bed, court records state.

Police found that several of the items had been stolen in six of the recent burglaries, all of which happened in Waldorf, according to Morgan's charging document.

During most of the break-ins, someone entered the residence through a window and stole mainly electronic items such as video games, laptops and flat-screen televisions.

Police spokeswoman Diane Richardson said that officers think about 30 of this year's Waldorf burglaries are connected and that multiple people are involved in the string of break-ins.

Officers are still investigating Morgan's alleged connection with the crimes.

She also said the thieves might have been selling the stolen property to acquaintances instead of in pawn shops and encouraged parents to keep track of their children's purchases.

Following his arrest, Morgan was charged with six break-ins and with attempted first-degree burglary in the April 3 incident. A grand jury indicted Morgan in the cases earlier this month.

His arraignment for all seven cases is scheduled for June 5, according to court records.
