Citizens with information about crimes in Charles County can provide it anonymously by calling the Crime Solvers at 866-411-TIPS.

A reward is offered in some cases for any tip that leads to the arrest or indictment of a suspect.

Store workers find white powder in mail

The Charles County hazmat team was called to a Waldorf store May 6 after employees at the business found a white powder inside a greeting card, according to police.

At 7:56 p.m., workers at Fred's Sports at 2895 Crain Highway were opening mail when they discovered the powder.

The hazmat team later determined the substance was not harmful. There are no suspects and the case is still under investigation.

Game systems taken from home

Someone pried open the window of a home in the 3200 block of Westdale Court in Waldorf between 7 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. May 6 and stole game systems, video games and other electronics, police reported.

The scene was processed for evidence.

Police arrest suspect in stabbing

The suspect in a Waldorf stabbing was arrested May 6 in Bryantown, according to police.

At 11:23 a.m., members of the sheriff's office warrant and fugitive unit went to a house in the 5900 block of Roosevelt Place after receiving a tip that Charles McDaniel Brooks, 23, of Bryantown was there.

Brooks had an outstanding felony arrest warrant for first-degree and second-degree assault stemming from a stabbing that occurred April 27 on Ell Lane.

Detective S. Fetterolf is investigating.

Cigarettes stolen from Waldorf store

Someone broke into a Waldorf business May 5 and stole cigarettes.

At about 11:50 p.m. police went to the Quick Shop at 3030 St. Charles Parkway in Waldorf to check a burglar alarm. A police dog search was initiated, and officers recovered a tool used to break out a window.

Authorities investigate arson

Fire marshals investigating a May 7 arson in Waldorf report that a group of eight young people was seen running from the area of the burning home.

A neighbor discovered the blaze at the vacant Walleye Court residence and reported it to authorities at 6:34 p.m., according to a fire marshal's office press release.

About 35 members of the Waldorf, La Plata, Brandywine, Accokeek and Bryans Road volunteer fire departments controlled the blaze in about 35 minutes. The arson caused an estimated $250,000 in damage to the home.

Deputy state fire marshals found that the fire was set in the living room of the home.

Witnesses reported noticing eight young people near the residence and shortly afterward seeing smoke coming from the home.

Authorities are seeking the public's help in identifying the young people.

Fire set in high school bathroom

Someone set fire to a trash can in a men's bathroom at Westlake High School on May 11, according to a report from the state fire marshal's office. A student discovered the fire at about 12:14 p.m.

A teacher extinguished the fire, which caused about $15 in damage. Last week, someone set fire to a trash can in a women's restroom at Westlake, authorities reported.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Suspicious package is harmless

Authorities on May 11 determined that a suspicious package left at a Waldorf car wash was a device used by local scavenger hunters, according to a report. Workers at the Speedy Clean Car Wash reported the package at about 10:45 a.m. Bomb technicians used a robot to move the package and found that it wasn't hazardous, the report showed.
