School support professionals of the year named

Patricia DeCarlo, a paraeducator at Park Hall Elementary School, and Warren Trossbach of the school system's maintenance department were named as St. Mary's public schools' Educational Support Professionals of the Year for 2009. Also recognized was Susan Tippett, a secretary in the department of curriculum and instruction, who received honorable mention for her contributions to the school system and community.

New students can meet Hollywood Elementary

Hollywood Elementary School will host a "meet and greet" on Thursday, May 21, at 7 p.m., at the school located at 44345 Joy Chapel Road. The purpose is to provide information to families of students who will be new to the school or transferring to the school during the 2009-2010 school year. This is also an opportunity to meet Principal Jennifer Gilman, meet the teachers and staff, and tour the school site. For more details, contact the school at 301-373-4350.

Conference set on special education in Lexington Park

St. Mary's public school's department of special education is sponsoring a transition conference luncheon on Thursday, May 21, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Exploration III Conference Center located on Exploration Drive in Lexington Park. This conference is for parents of middle school and high school students who receive special education services. Speakers will present information on the funding and services that may be available for students after they transition from high school. Parents of students who have made this transition will speak about their experiences. Registration is required for this free luncheon. Support staff leaders honored

The first participants in the leadership development program Tomorrow's Leaders, which is held for the support staff of St. Mary's public schools, were recognized May 6 by the St. Mary's County Board of Education. This year-long program provides participants with a broader knowledge of the school system, leadership skills, management skills and the role educational support staff play. Ann Davis, Sharon Dvorak, Van Sage, Joe Shade, Mary Smith, Beverly Dahlstrom, Buddy Goddard, Mary Ann Hickey, Tracy Lumpkins, Donna Phelan, Phyllis Smith, Eric Turpin, Eugene Butler, Lori Byrne, Pat Davidson, Cheri Godfrey, Paul Hampton, Leslie Montgomery, Tammy Smith, Faith Abernethy, Clare Brubaker, Scott Lawrence, Kathy Mancini, Gloria Ramos, Warren Trossbach, Louis Barnes, Janice Batts, Brenda Dale, Florence Cline Devine and Lawrence Hatton participated.

Two from Great Mills High given awards for volunteer service

Great Mills High School students Ryshell Butler and Anthony Smith were among 47 Maryland student Service Stars recognized this month for extraordinary contributions to their communities through service learning and for their leadership in promoting service among their peers. The students recognized have gone beyond their district's service-learning plan, giving hundreds, and in some cases, in excess of 1,000 hours of service to their communities.
