The talk will turn to taxes at commissioners' public hearing

Friday, May 15, 2009

A recent paper had the advertisement for the annual Charles County commissioners increase in your property taxes. Forget all that talk they have had lately about this being the wrong time to raise taxes, they are about to raise your taxes.

By law, they have to set a public hearing. This one is set for May 20 at 7:30 p.m. in La Plata at the commissioners' hearing room. This might be the most important public hearing between now and the 2010 elections.

What you can do:

Write to the commissioners — F. Wayne Cooper, Edith Patterson, Gary Hodge, Reuben Collins II and Sam Graves. Write one letter to all five or individually, addressed to Charles County Commissioners, P.O. Box 2150, La Plata, MD 20646.

E-mail the commissioners at commissioner@charlescounty.org.

Show up at the hearing and sign up to speak.

When you speak, tell your story or tell the story of how the constantly rising property taxes have hurt someone you know.

Charles County property taxes have doubled since 2001. These commissioners never met a tax they didn't like.

They supported the flush tax, the private well tax; they increased dramatically the property transfer tax.

Please, let's get together and stop them.

Democracy is not a spectator sport.
