A North Beach town resident was recently charged by police for allegedly threatening Mayor Michael Bojokles.
Peter Davis, 64, allegedly yelled at Bojokles at the town hall on May 1 and made threats to kill him, Bojokles stated in a charging document. Davis is now being charged with threatening an official in the Calvert County District Court, according to court records.
Bojokles told the responding officer that Davis said, "If I hear you say anything else about me I will [expletive] kill you, I will [expletive] you up," the report stated.
When responding police officer Dfc. John McCarroll spoke with Davis, he admitted that he said he would harm Bojokles, but that he did not threaten to kill him. Davis told police that "he was angry with Bojokles for making comments to various people in attempt to ruin his good reputation," charging documents stated.
Davis also stated in court records that this has been happening since Davis was in opposition to Bojokles and the construction plans of the new North Beach Town Hall, according to charging documents. Davis provided McCarroll with names of people who he said could attest that Bojokles has been making comments against him.
Davis's comments and actions were witnessed by town employees who were present at the town hall at the time of the incident.
"The extent and level of provocation over the last 18 months which led up to the events of May 1, 2009, has been previously reported to and is in the hands of the authorities. I have already given the residents of North Beach a sincere public apology for my inappropriate behavior and intemperate remarks," Davis wrote in an e-mail to The Calvert Recorder.
Davis is on the North Beach Town Planning Committee and this is not the first time he has gotten agitated and made threats toward North Beach Town employees, Bojokles told police.
Davis did not want to talk about his charges, but said, "They've [the town] been after me for about 18 months. I have a file about an inch thick."
After speaking with Davis, McCarroll wrote in his report that he advised Bojokles "to seek a peace/protective order against Davis through the courts." McCarroll stated in his report that Davis "got worked up and calmed back down on several occasions" while he was speaking with him.
The trial is scheduled for July 24 in the district court. If Davis is convicted of the charge, the maximum sentence is three years incarceration and a $25,000 fine, in accordance with Maryland law.
