Air Expo '09 event set for Memorial Day weekend
Looking for something fun and free for the family to do over Memorial Day weekend? Then come out to Naval Air Station Patuxent River's Air Expo '09 on May 23 and 24 featuring the Navy's Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels. The Blue Angels' mission is to enhance Navy and Marine Corps recruiting efforts and to represent the naval service to the United States, its elected leadership and foreign nations. The Blue Angels serve as positive role models and goodwill ambassadors for the U. S. Navy and Marine Corps.
A Blue Angels flight demonstration exhibits choreographed refinements of skills possessed by all naval aviators. It includes the graceful aerobatic maneuvers of the four-jet diamond formation, in concert with the fast-paced, high-performance maneuvers of its two solo pilots. Finally, the team illustrates the pinnacle of precision flying, performing maneuvers locked as a unit in the renowned, six-jet delta formation.
Also headlining Air Expo '09 will be the Army's Golden Knights Parachute Team and the Air Force's Viper East F-16 Demonstration Team.
Past will meet present and future in the static aircraft display area, which will include historic aircraft retired from service and current models and variants being used by war fighters today.
Proceeds from Air Expo '09 will go to Patuxent River Naval Air Station's Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department, which provides support and recreational services that contribute to the mental, physical and emotional well-being, retention, readiness and quality of life to single sailors and Navy families. Parking and admission to Air Expo '09 are free. Gates open at 9 a.m.

Public forum on nuclear safety set for May 20
Leagues of Women Voters of Calvert and St. Mary's counties will sponsor a free public education forum on Wednesday, May 20.
Location of the forum is the Calvert Pines Senior Center, 450 W. Dares Beach Road in Prince Frederick, from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
The forum title is "Nuclear Waste: Safety, Health and Environmental Issues."
A panel of distinguished and diverse experts has been invited to present the pro and con aspects of the issues.
The forum panel will address issues and concerns including nuclear technologies, health, safety, environment and waste.
The forum format includes a question and answer session from the audience. The forum will be moderated by Calvert league member Klaus Zwilsky, with forum format and ground rules developed by the Leagues of Women Voters.
Issues involving nuclear reactors are complex and difficult topics worthy of exploring to help raise the level of public understanding. The leagues were encouraged to conduct such a forum by public demand in reference to the proposed third nuclear reactor planned to be built at the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, the site of two other current nuclear reactors in Lusby.
Constellation Energy has filed an application with the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to build the third nuclear reactor. The environmental/safety plan submitted by Constellation is available at the NRC Web site www.nrc.gov.
