The College of Southern Maryland announced the appointment of three new directors of the College of Southern Maryland Foundation Board. J. Harry Norris, Rosemary Keffler and Candice Quinn Kelly join the foundation’s efforts to promote academic excellence, growth, progress and the general welfare of the college by raising and managing funds.
Although a fairly new resident, Calvert resident Keffler is excited to begin her term as a CSM Foundation Board director.
‘‘I am eager to use my experience in estate planning to assist the college in developing and implementing lifetime giving opportunities for the community,” Keffler said.
An associate attorney with Davis, Upton & Palumbo LLC, Keffler is a former IRS employee and has a legal background in estate planning, real estate and business law.
She earned a bachelor’s of arts in human resources management from the Catholic University of America before attending the University of Baltimore School of Law where she graduated magna cum laude. She is a member of the Calvert County Bar Association, the Huntingtown Elementary School PTA and Jesus the Divine Word parish.
J. Harry Norris III graduated from CSM with an associate’s degree in general studies before studying English at Towson State University.
He is the owner of Main Street Appraisals, and his employees have benefited from the college’s computer and appraisal classes.
As a long-time resident of Southern Maryland and mayor of Leonardtown, Norris understands the importance of CSM to the town’s residents and businesses.
In addition to running his own business and the town of Leonardtown, Norris serves on the board of directors for the Leonardtown Chamber of Commerce and Leonardtown Recreation Inc.
Candice Quinn Kelly, owner of Waldorf’s Maredith Management LLC and a former Charles County commissioner, understands firsthand the value of education that is locally accessible.
She recently worked with the CSM Foundation’s fundraising efforts for the St. Charles Children’s Learning Center.

Farmers market guide available
Nearly half of the farmers’ markets in the state are now open, selling early season produce like kale, salad greens, spinach and asparagus as well as hanging flower baskets and bedding plants.
The 2007 Maryland Farmers’ Market Directory, listing locations and hours of each of the state’s markets, is now available through the Maryland Department of Agriculture.
This year, there are 77 markets with at least one in every county and Baltimore city.
‘‘At farmers’ markets across the state, customers can purchase a wide variety of locally-grown and -produced products including fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers, plants, eggs, meats and cheeses,” said Agriculture Secretary Roger L. Richardson.
‘‘Not only will consumers enjoy some of the freshest and best tasting products around, they will directly support our family farmers. Every dollar spent on local agricultural products contributes to the economic health of the community, keeps our land in farming and helps to support Maryland’s farmers of tomorrow.”
Farmers’ markets not only provide an important source of income for farmers, they also provide the community with a meeting place where residents catch up with each other and purchase farm-fresh, nutritious, local products. Customers have the opportunity to ask farmers how their products are grown and how to prepare them.
Of the state’s 77 markets, 69 participate in the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program which provides qualified senior citizens and Women, Infants and Children program participants with checks they can use at farmers’ markets to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables and cut herbs.
The program is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is administered by MDA in partnership with the Maryland Departments of Aging and Health and Mental Hygiene.
During the 2006 season, the FMNP provided more than $540,000 in fresh produce to WIC participants and qualified seniors while providing income to farmers selling in Maryland’s farmers’ markets.
The 2007 Maryland Farmers’ Market Directory is available online at www.mda. state.md.us, or through MDA’s Marketing Division at 50 Harry S. Truman Parkway in Annapolis, or call 410-841-5770.
