Complicated crash damages restaurant, cars

Friday, May 29, 2009

A vehicle struck a telephone pole and a brick sign then spun out of control and skidded through a parking lot on Sunday night, smashing into a parked vehicle, causing a domino effect of damage to another vehicle and a building.

According to a Calvert County Sheriff's Office press release, at about 10 p.m. on Sunday, Dfc. Aaron Locke activated his emergency equipment on a vehicle for a suspicion of driving while under the influence. The vehicle was traveling south on Route 4 near Main Street in Huntingtown.

The driver of the 1998 Ford Windstar van, Delvon Vashone Gantt, 29, of Lusby allegedly moved from the left lane to the right lane as a silver SUV that was in front of the Gantt's van traveling in the right lane moved to the shoulder, forcing Gantt off the roadway. Gantt lost control of the van and struck a telephone pole, then struck the brick and cinderblock sign belonging to Mexico Restaurant. The van then skidded through the parking lot of the Mexico Restaurant and as it was sliding, flying debris struck the back of a parked vehicle.

The van then hit another parked vehicle, causing that vehicle to strike another vehicle and a brick building, collapsing the front and side cinderblock walls.

The van then spun and struck a third vehicle and finally came to rest.

Gantt, who refused medical treatment, was charged with driving while intoxicated and no one was injured during the crash, according to police.
