The team was awarded first place in the Math Graph Interpretation competition and second place in both the Banner and Effective Communications competitions.
The team advanced to the state level when it was chosen as the overall elementary school winner at the regional competition in March. Overall winners are chosen by the number of points they earn through competing in six different competitions. The team placed first, second and third in three events at the regional competition.
The student team members who competed at the regional competition and Maryland MESA Day were Brooke Armstrong, Ryan Burton, Hannah Clark, Kacie Clark, Darby Edwards, Jessica Foster, Daniel Harden, Victoria Harley, Paige Hood, John Knobloch, Jordan Madison, Alexis Queen, Alyssa Queen, Arynn Schenck, Trevon Taylor and Sydney Terrell.
Matula teacher Tracy Beauregard is team coordinator. Michelle Cooney, a music teacher at Matula, and Kristen Park, a science teacher at Matula, served as advisers to the team.
The program’s goals are to increase the number of engineers, scientists, mathematicians and related professionals at technical and management levels and to serve as a driving force in encouraging and assisting minorities and females in achieving success in these fields.
