Tidewater School students helped care for five-week-old kittens recently. The project was meant to teach responsibility and caring to the children.

Preschoolers at the Tidewater School in Huntingtown got a lesson in caring last week when the Friends of Felines of Calvert County visited with some of some of their tiny beneficiaries.

The children helped feed the five-week-old kittens and donated supplies for their care, according to a release.

School Director Nancy S. Libertini said the school periodically invites animal rescue groups to come in to teach the children about kindness and proper animal care.

"It's two-fold: to learn that they need to care for their pets and the need to be responsible as a community, helping the community," Libertini said. "To be responsible for pets. There's so many stray animals, we can't ignore this need."

The kids enjoyed themselves while they learned these lessons, she said.

"Oh my gosh, yes, they loved it. They were wonderful," she said. "I was so impressed with their awareness that animals need to be cared for, need food, need safety, need to be protected. Important lessons."

Friends of Felines is a nonprofit cat rescue devoted to reducing the number of feral cats in Calvert County through spaying and neutering, according to a release, helping people manage growing colonies by trapping, testing, neutering and then, hopefully, returning the cats to their colonies. Friends of Felines relies on food donations from the public to feed more than 150 cats daily in its colony and sanctuary programs, and also depends on donations to feed and provide litter for about 45 to 50 cats and kittens in their foster program. To help Friends of Felines by making a donation or becoming a volunteer, contact Carol Hall at 410-414-2122 or davishall@comcast.net, or go to friends-of-felines.com.

Portion of Stoakley Road to be closed for bridge replacement

County government will close a portion of Stoakley Road in Prince Frederick beginning June 15 to replace a bridge spanning Mill Creek.

The bridge replacement project will occur over a period of eight to 10 weeks. Stoakley Road will be closed in the vicinity of the Mill Creek Bridge only. Motorists will be able to use Stoakley Road from Rt. 2-4 east of the bridge. Points west and south of the bridge may be accessed via Rt. 231 and Barstow Road. Detour signs will direct motorists to alternate routes.

The $209,000 project will include replacement of the bridge deck and parapet walls. The parapets will feature ornate rails to replicate the 1930s style of the existing structure, according to a release.

Help fight cancer close to home

The American Cancer Society is offering a chance to have fun close to home while supporting cancer research, according to a release.

"A Relay For Life event is a great place to enjoy family fun. There is always an abundance of food choices, free entertainment, and activities for children. Proceeds go to benefit the American Cancer Society and our mission to help people stay well, get well, find cures, and fight back against cancer," the release said.

"The American Cancer Society recognizes that everyone has been touched in some way by cancer. When you attend this family-friendly event, you will also see how we celebrate cancer survivors, remember those we've lost to cancer, and honor those who are battling cancer. We also strive to educate individuals about how to prevent cancer and detect it early."
