A woman was struck and killed along Indian Head Highway in Accokeek in the early morning hours of June 4, according to Prince George's County police.
Police said that Oluwawemimo A. Akinuli, 36, of Washington, D.C., was walking in the highway's northbound lane near the intersection with Berry Road when she was struck and killed by a vehicle traveling in the northbound lane sometime before 2 a.m.
Police said the driver of the vehicle was headed to his home in Charles County and thought he had hit an animal. He called Charles County police to report the incident at 1:47 a.m., and the department dispatched Prince George's police to the scene.
Cpl. Mike Rodriguez, a Prince George's County Police Department spokesman, said no charges have been filed against the driver of the vehicle and police are withholding his name because of the pending investigation.
Rodriguez said the woman appeared to be at fault because she was walking in the roadway when she was struck by the vehicle. Her body was found near a turning lane.
"We urge the public to come to us if they have any information," he said.
Police shut down the northbound lane of Indian Head between Manning and Livingston roads for several hours Thursday morning to investigate.
Anyone with information about the accident is urged to call the Prince George's County Police Department's collision analysis reconstruction unit at 301-731-4422.
